He built his reputation originating roles in David Mamet plays such as American Buffalo and The Water Engine, and in 1972 co-founded Chicago's St. Nicholas Theater Company with Mamet and others. His screen breakthrough came as the hapless car salesman Jerry Lundegaard in Fargo (1996), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to appear in Boogie Nights (1997), Air Force One (1997), Wag the Dog (1997), Magnolia (1999), Mystery Men (1999), Jurassic Park III (2001), Seabiscuit (2003), Thank You for Smoking (2005), Bobby (2006), Room (2015), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) and The Running Man (2025).
