Book Tower of Power
Tower of Power is a funk and R&B band and horn section from Oakland, California, performing since 1968. It began when tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo met baritone saxophonist Stephen "Doc" Kupka that summer, and the group, then called The Motowns, took the name Tower of Power in order to play Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium. By 1970 they had signed with Bill Graham's San Francisco Records and released East Bay Grease. They followed with Bump City in 1972, Back to Oakland in 1974, Urban Renewal in 1975, We Came to Play in 1978, Souled Out in 1995, Rhythm & Business in 1997, Oakland Zone in 2003, Great American Soulbook in 2009, Soul Side of Town in 2018, Step Up in 2020 and It's Christmas in 2023, twenty studio albums in total. Singer Lenny Williams fronted the band during its biggest commercial period, in 1973 and 1974, and Tower of Power has placed eight songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including "You're Still a Young Man," "So Very Hard to Go," "What Is Hip?" and "Don't Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream)." Razor-sharp horns and deep funk grooves drive their show.
