The Drums is an American indie pop project from New York City, led by singer and songwriter Jonny Pierce. Pierce and Jacob Graham, friends since childhood, first worked together in the electro-pop group Elkland before conceiving The Drums in 2008. After moving to Brooklyn in 2009, they played their first gig within a week at the NYC Pop Fest and released the Summertime! EP that October. The buzz was immediate: the band landed on the BBC Sound of 2010 shortlist, topped NME's tips for 2010, won Pitchfork readers' Best Hope for 2010 vote, and joined the 2010 NME Awards Tour. Their self-titled debut, The Drums (2010), was followed by Portamento (2011) and Encyclopedia (2014). After Graham's 2016 exit, Pierce carried the project forward on his own with Abysmal Thoughts (2017), Brutalism (2019) and Jonny (2023), turning the music more personal while keeping its jangly, surf-tinged hooks. A Drums show pairs shimmering guitars and danceable rhythms with Pierce's open-hearted vocals, drawing a devoted indie audience that has followed him through every chapter.
