Book Jambinai
Formed in Seoul in 2009, Jambinai is a South Korean post-rock group celebrated for fusing the crushing dynamics of rock with the haunting textures of traditional Korean instruments. The lineup features Kim Bo-mi on haegeum and vocals, Lee Il-woo on electric guitar, piri, taepyeongso and vocals, Sim Eun-yong on geomungo and vocals, Yu Byeong-koo on bass and backing vocals, and Choi Jae-hyuk on drums. Their music sets bowed and plucked folk instruments against drums, bass and electric guitar, drawing comparisons to Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. After a self-titled EP in 2010, their debut album Différance (2012) won Best Crossover Album at the 2013 Korean Music Awards. The band then signed with the respected label Bella Union, which released A Hermitage (2016), ONDA (2019) and the EP Apparition (2022). On a global stage, Jambinai performed at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang alongside an orchestra of geomungo players. Their concerts move from delicate, meditative passages to towering walls of sound, offering audiences a powerful and genuinely distinctive live experience that bridges centuries-old Korean musical tradition and modern heavy music.
