Book Stereolab
Stereolab are a London-founded British-French group, started in 1990 by guitarist and keyboardist Tim Gane and singer Lætitia Sadier, the songwriting partnership at the heart of the group. Their sound is instantly recognizable: vintage analog keyboards, hypnotic motorik rhythms and Sadier's cool vocals in English and French, drawing on krautrock, lounge, jazz and 1960s French pop, with lyrics shaped by Surrealist and Situationist ideas. Longtime members included vocalist and keyboardist Mary Hansen, drummer Andy Ramsay and, for a period, Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas. The band built a cult following through a run of inventive records, starting with Peng! (1992) and continuing through Mars Audiac Quintet (1994), Emperor Tomato Ketchup (1996), Dots and Loops (1997), Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night (1999), Sound‐Dust (2001), Margerine Eclipse (2004), Chemical Chords (2008) and Not Music (2010), releasing music through their own Duophonic label. After a ten-year pause they returned to the stage in 2019, and in 2025 they released Instant Holograms on Metal Film, their first new album in fifteen years. Live, Stereolab are mesmerizing, locking into long, shimmering grooves that pull audiences in.
