Book Robert Engle

Robert F. Engle is an American economist and statistician who shared the Nobel economics prize in 2003 with Clive Granger for his work on time-varying volatility in economic data. His ARCH model, short for Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity, gave researchers and markets a practical way to capture how financial prices swing between calm and turbulent periods, and it became a core tool for measuring risk, pricing options and managing portfolios. Engle earned a physics degree from Williams College, then a master's in physics and a PhD in economics from Cornell. He taught at MIT before a long tenure at the University of California, San Diego, where he is professor emeritus. At NYU's Stern School of Business he co-directs the Volatility and Risk Institute and holds emeritus status in finance. His honors include fellowships in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society and the American Statistical Association. Engle brings Nobel-level authority on risk, volatility and financial markets to any audience.
