Book Gerard 't Hooft

Gerard 't Hooft, an emeritus professor of theoretical physics at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, shared the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physics with his former thesis advisor Martinus Veltman for revealing the quantum structure of electroweak interactions. His research spans gauge theory, black holes, quantum gravity and the foundations of quantum mechanics, and his landmark contributions include proving that gauge theories are renormalizable, developing dimensional regularization, and helping establish the holographic principle. 't Hooft studied physics at Utrecht, turning to elementary particles for his master's work under Veltman in 1968 at a time when Yang–Mills theory was still considered a fringe pursuit. Over his career he has been associated with CERN, Leiden University and Utrecht University. His many honors include the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics (1979), the Wolf Prize in Physics (1981), the Lorentz Medal (1986), the Franklin Medal and Spinoza Prize (both 1995), the Lomonosov Gold Medal (2010) and the Marcel Grossmann Award (2021). He is an Officer of the Legion of Honour and a Commander of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. 't Hooft makes the deepest questions in physics vivid and accessible.
