Book Martin Hellman

Martin Hellman is an American cryptologist and mathematician who, together with Whitfield Diffie and Ralph Merkle, invented public-key cryptography, the idea that makes secure online banking, shopping and messaging possible. The 1976 paper he wrote with Diffie, New Directions in Cryptography, introduced what became known as the Diffie–Hellman key exchange and solved the long-standing puzzle of how to share secret keys safely. In 2015 he and Diffie received the ACM Turing Award, often called the Nobel Prize of computing. His other honors include the Marconi Prize (2000), the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal (2010), the Paris Kanellakis Award (1996), the Louis E. Levy Medal of the Franklin Institute (1997), the EFF Award (1994), and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (2011) and the National Cyber Security Hall of Fame (2012). After stints at IBM and MIT, he spent twenty-five years on the Stanford electrical engineering faculty and is now professor emeritus. Hellman also speaks on privacy and on the risks of nuclear deterrence, and co-wrote A New Map for Relationships: Creating True Love at Home and Peace on the Planet (2016) with his wife, Dorothie.
