Book Mike Holober
Mike Holober is a jazz pianist, composer, arranger and teacher from the United States, known for richly orchestrated large-ensemble writing. After settling in New York in 1986, he worked as a composer and sideman, including with baritone saxophonist Nick Brignola, then formed The Mike Holober Quintet with Tim Ries, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Brian Blade, Scott Colley and John Patitucci, recording Canyon in 2003 and Wish List in 2006. He leads the big band The Gotham Jazz Orchestra, whose albums include Thought Trains in 2004, Quake in 2009 and the 2019 double album Hiding Out, featuring works commissioned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Westchester Jazz Orchestra and the West Point-based U.S. Army Jazz Knights, plus a Jobim arrangement spotlighting trumpeter Marvin Stamm. His octet Balancing Act debuted on record in 2015, and backed by New Jazz Works funding from Chamber Music America, he composed the song cycle Don't Let Go, premiered at Symphony Space in 2018. His 2024 album This Rock We're On: Imaginary Letters continued that work, and he has earned a Grammy nomination. In concert he offers sophisticated, lyrical modern jazz.
