Book Midnight Star
Midnight Star is an American R&B and funk band whose vocoder-laced grooves helped define the electro-funk sound of the 1980s. The group came together in 1976 at Kentucky State University, led by trumpeter and producer Reggie Calloway with vocalist Belinda Lipscomb and a self-contained lineup of players, and SOLAR Records chief Dick Griffey signed them after a 1978 New York showcase. Following The Beginning (1980), Standing Together (1981) and Victory (1982), the band broke wide open with No Parking on the Dance Floor (1983), which reached No. 2 on Billboard's Top Black Albums chart. Its lead single "Freak-A-Zoid" climbed to No. 2 on the Black Singles chart, and the record also delivered "Wet My Whistle" and its title track. Earlier singles "Hot Spot" and "I've Been Watching You" had already put them on R&B radio. The catalog continued with Planetary Invasion (1984), Headlines (1986), Midnight Star (1988), Work It Out (1990) and 15th Avenue (2002). On stage, Midnight Star brings party-ready funk, synth textures and dance-floor classics.
