Book Kimberle Williams Crenshaw
Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw is an American civil rights advocate and legal scholar who coined and developed intersectionality, a framework for understanding how overlapping identities such as race, gender and class shape experiences of discrimination. She teaches at both the UCLA School of Law, where she joined the faculty in 1986, and Columbia Law School, where she became a full professor in 1995 and founded the Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies in 2011. A founding figure in critical race theory, her teaching covers civil rights, constitutional law and critical race studies. In 1991 she assisted the legal team representing Anita Hill during the Senate confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas, and students twice elected her professor of the year. Her influential writing includes Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex, and her book Backtalker arrived in 2026. Honors include the Gittler Prize (2017), and the British Academy elected her a Fellow in 2026. Crenshaw is a powerful, precise speaker who connects law, history and current events, giving audiences tools for thinking about equity, inclusion and justice.
