Book Jon M. Chu
Jon M. Chu is an American filmmaker whose joyful, music-driven movies have become box office and cultural events. A graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, he drew Hollywood's attention with his student short When the Kids Are Away and made his studio debut with Step Up 2: The Streets (2008), followed by Step Up 3D (2010). He created the dance web series The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers and directed the concert films Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (2011) and Justin Bieber's Believe (2013), along with G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), Jem and the Holograms (2015) and Now You See Me 2 (2016). His 2018 romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians was among the first major studio films with a mostly Asian cast, and he followed it with the musical In the Heights (2021). Chu then brought the stage blockbuster to the screen in two parts, Wicked (2024) and Wicked: For Good (2025), earning the National Board of Review Award for Best Director and the Critics' Choice Award for Best Director for the first film. Time named him to the Time 100 in 2025. Chu speaks on creativity and storytelling.
