Book Devendra Banhart
Devendra Banhart is a visual artist and singer-songwriter from the United States who grew up in Venezuela and California. After leaving the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000, he spent a summer in Paris opening for indie rock bands, including Sonic Youth. Michael Gira of Swans, who ran Young God Records, heard his demo The Charles C. Leary and helped assemble his first release, Oh Me Oh My, in 2002, followed by the quiet acoustic records Rejoicing in the Hands and Niño Rojo. He moved to XL Recordings for Cripple Crow (2005), then released Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (2007) and What Will We Be (2009), the first of his albums under Warner Bros. Records. Later releases include Mala (2013), Ape in Pink Marble (2016), Ma (2019), Refuge (2021) and Flying Wig (2023), and he has received a Grammy nomination. Banhart's work in drawing and painting runs alongside his music, and he performs with a spare, intimate folk style and a distinctive, adventurous catalog.
