Book Carol Lawrence
Carol Lawrence is an American actress and singer who made Broadway history as the original Maria in West Side Story in 1957. That performance earned her a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and she played the role for two years before returning for the show's 1960 season. Born in Melrose Park, Illinois, she first reached Broadway as a dancer in the 1951 revue Borscht Capades alongside Joel Grey. Her stage credits went on to include Saratoga, Subways Are for Sleeping, I Do! I Do! and Kiss of the Spider Woman, plus several musicals at The Muny in St. Louis, among them Funny Girl. On television she appeared in dramas such as Rawhide, The Six Million Dollar Man and Murder, She Wrote. Her honors include a Theatre World Award in 1958, Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year in 1960, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and a Grammy nomination. Recordings include Timex Presents Opryland U.S.A. (1973) and Tonight at 8:30 (1989). Lawrence remains a link to the golden age of the Broadway musical, with a career built on classic show music and star presence.
