Book Stroke 9
Stroke 9 is an alternative rock band from Marin County, California, formed in 1989 and best known for the late-'90s radio hits "Little Black Backpack" and "Letters." Built around founding members Esterkyn and Gueldner, the group cut its teeth playing anywhere it could around the Bay Area and put out the independent releases Boy Meets Girl (1993) and Bumper to Bumper (1995). Signing with Universal Records led to Nasty Little Thoughts in 1999, which reached the US charts and carried both hit singles, and the band even appeared in the film EDtv while promoting the record. The follow-up Rip It Off produced "Kick Some Ass," featured in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Stroke 9 then went independent with All In (2004) and released The Last of the International Playboys (2007) on Rock Ridge Records, later returning with Calafrio and Songs We Didn't Love in 2020. Their shows are packed with catchy hooks, crunchy guitars and a playful sense of humor, delivering the singalong energy of the alternative rock era to fans who grew up with those songs.
