Dame Shirley Bassey is a Welsh singer whose commanding voice and career spanning seven decades have made her a true international icon. Born in Cardiff, she began performing in 1953 and released her first album, Born to Sing the Blues, in 1957. She is famed for voicing three James Bond title songs, Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Moonraker (1979), the only artist to sing multiple official Bond themes; "Goldfinger" entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008. Her many hits include "As I Love You" and the dance-floor favorite "History Repeating," and her 35 studio albums range from Something (1970) to I Am What I Am (1984). She has sold 140 million records, hosted her own BBC variety series, and has played the Royal Albert Hall 45 times since her 1971 debut there. She won the first Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist in 1977, was made a Dame, became a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2003, and was named to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2024.
