Book Screaming Trees

Screaming Trees were the American rock band from Ellensburg, Washington, formed in 1984 and remembered as pioneers of the grunge movement. The original lineup featured the brothers Gary Lee Conner on guitar and Van Conner on bass, singer Mark Lanegan and drummer Mark Pickerel, with Barrett Martin taking over on drums in 1991. While closely tied to grunge, the band's sound drew heavily on hard rock and 1960s psychedelia, giving them a distinctive edge among their Pacific Northwest peers. They released a string of independent records in the 1980s, including Clairvoyance (1986), Even If and Especially When (1987), Invisible Lantern (1988) and Buzz Factory (1989), before signing with Epic Records in 1990. Uncle Anesthesia (1991) was their major label debut, and Sweet Oblivion (1992) became their best-known album, thanks to its lead single (1992), which also appeared on the soundtrack to the film Singles and became a radio and MTV hit. Their final studio album, Dust (1996), earned strong reviews. Last Words: The Final Recordings arrived in 2011. Lanegan's deep, weathered voice remains the band's defining signature.
