Book Sam Taylor-Johnson

Sam Taylor-Johnson is a British artist and filmmaker who moved from acclaimed gallery work to directing major feature films. She emerged in the early 1990s as part of the Young British Artists, first with fine-art photography and then with multi-screen video installations such as Killing Time (1994), Travesty of a Mockery and Pent-Up (both 1996). At the Venice Biennale in 1997 she took the Illy Café Prize as the event's most promising young artist and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1998. Her public projects include a vast photographic mural wrapped around Selfridges in London in 2000, the cover for Elton John's Songs From the West Coast (2001), and David, a video portrait commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in 2002. She made her feature directing debut with Nowhere Boy (2009), about the youth of John Lennon, then directed Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) and Back to Black (2024). She earned an European Film Award nomination for a short film in 2008 and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2011. She speaks on creativity and moving between art and cinema.
