Book Michael Gross
Michael Gross is a German swimming legend nicknamed "The Albatross" for his towering 6 foot 7 frame and an arm span of 2.13 meters. Competing for West Germany, he won three Olympic gold medals in freestyle and butterfly, two at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and one in 1988, along with world titles in 1982, 1986 and 1991. Born in Frankfurt am Main and trained at EOSC Offenbach, he dominated the 200 meter butterfly through the 1980s, setting four world records in the event. In Los Angeles he cruised to victory in the 200 meter freestyle and upset American favorite Pablo Morales to win the 100 meter butterfly. That same week he anchored a memorable showdown in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay, swimming what was then the fastest relay split in the event's history, though the surging American team, nicknamed the "Grossbusters," took the gold. Across his career he won thirteen World Championship medals, five of them gold, and thirteen European titles. He was named German Sportspersonality of the Year in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1988 and has been inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and Germany's Sports Hall of Fame.
