Sam Elliott is an American actor whose rich, deep voice and rugged screen presence have defined Westerns and character roles for close to six decades. He appeared early in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and made his film debut in The Way West (1967), then moved up to leads with Frogs (1972) and his breakout in Lifeguard (1976). Mask (1985) brought major commercial success, and Conagher (1991) earned him Golden Globe nominations. He starred alongside Patrick Swayze in Road House (1989) and Buffalo Girls (1995), the latter bringing his first Emmy nomination. Through the 1990s he played John Buford in Gettysburg (1993), Virgil Earp in Tombstone (1993) and the Stranger in The Big Lebowski (1998), followed by We Were Soldiers (2002), Hulk (2003), Blood Diamond (2006), Ghost Rider (2007) and The Golden Compass (2007). Later work includes Justified, Grace and Frankie, The Ranch and the lead in The Hero (2017). He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2019 and has won a Screen Actors Guild Award. Elliott brings authority and unmistakable gravitas to any appearance.
