Book Refused
Refused were a Swedish hardcore punk band from Umeå, formed in 1991, whose uncompromising politics and restless musical ambition reshaped the punk scene. Dennis Lyxzén sang, with Kristofer Steen on guitar, David Sandström on drums and Magnus Flagge on bass in the final lineup. A debut album appeared in 1994, followed by Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent in 1996 and five EPs. In 1998 they released The Shape of Punk to Come: A Chimerical Bombination in 12 Bursts, a record that folded jazz and electronic textures into hardcore and influenced a generation of later rock bands. The group reformed in 2012 and returned with Freedom in 2015 and War Music in 2019. Refused set out on a 2025 farewell run across North America and Europe and played their final show in Umeå on 21 December 2025, closing a career known for explosive, high-energy live performances.
