Book Embrace
Embrace was a Washington, D.C. hardcore band whose brief run in 1985 and 1986 left a lasting mark on punk history. Fronted by Ian MacKaye, formerly of Minor Threat, the quartet was completed by Chris Bald on bass, Ivor Hanson on drums and Michael Hampton on guitar, all alumni of the Faith, the group led by MacKaye's brother Alec. Alongside Rites of Spring and Beefeater, Embrace was a central act of the 1985 Revolution Summer movement, and the press counted it among the earliest bands tagged as emotional hardcore, a label the members themselves rejected. Its first gig came on July 28, 1985, at the Dupont Circle venue Food for Thought, and after only nine shows the band bowed out with a March 1986 date at the 9:30 Club. Its one release, the self-titled album Embrace, came out in 1987 after the split. The members went on to shape the next wave of D.C. music: MacKaye formed Fugazi in 1987, Hampton joined One Last Wish and later Manifesto with Hanson, and Bald moved on to Ignition. Embrace remains a touchstone for fans of emo and post-hardcore.
