Book Michelle Shocked

Michelle Shocked is an American singer-songwriter, born Karen Michelle Johnston, whose sharp, independent take on folk, country, swing and roots music has earned two Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and the Folk Album of the Year honor at the CMJ New Music Awards. She first reached international listeners when Pete Lawrence captured her singing on a portable tape recorder at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas and released it in Europe as The Texas Campfire Tapes (1986). Her 1988 debut album Short Sharp Shocked became a college radio favorite, and its single "Anchorage" made the Billboard Hot 100. That record opened what she called a trilogy, continuing with Captain Swing (1989) and Arkansas Traveler (1992). Her catalog also includes Kind Hearted Woman (1994), Good News (1998), Deep Natural (2002), a remarkable 2005 run of Got No Strings, Don't Ask Don't Tell, Mexican Standoff and Threesome, then Soul of My Soul (2009) and Inaudible Women (2014). Known for fighting to keep creative control of her music, Shocked brings a fiercely personal songbook and the spirit of the folk festival circuit to the stage.
