Book John Newcombe

John Newcombe is an Australian tennis legend who reached world No. 1 in both singles and doubles during one of the sport's golden eras. Famous for a booming serve and an attacking volley game, he collected 26 major titles in total: seven in singles, 17 in men's doubles, a record that stood for years, and two in mixed doubles. He was Australia's junior champion from 1961 to 1963 and helped his country win the Davis Cup in 1964, going on to contribute to five Davis Cup triumphs at a time when the competition carried the prestige of a major. His first Grand Slam singles crown came at Wimbledon in 1967, followed weeks later by the U.S. Championships, and by season's end he stood atop the world amateur rankings. In January 1968 he turned professional with Lamar Hunt's World Championship Tennis tour, part of the wave that ushered in the Open era. Newcombe has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame, named an Australian National Living Treasure and appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
