Book Guillermo del Toro
Guillermo del Toro is the Mexican filmmaker who turned dark fantasy into award-winning cinema, finding beauty and tenderness in monsters, ghosts and fairy-tale horror. Moving between Spanish-language films such as Cronos (1993), The Devil's Backbone (2001) and Pan's Labyrinth (2006) and English-language features including Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), Pacific Rim (2013) and Crimson Peak (2015), he built one of film's most distinctive visual signatures. The Shape of Water (2017) won the Golden Lion and earned him the Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture, plus BAFTA and Golden Globe directing honors. He later made Nightmare Alley (2021), took the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Pinocchio (2022), and released Frankenstein (2025). As a writer and producer he contributed to The Hobbit trilogy, created Netflix's Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities and the animated Tales of Arcadia franchise, and co-wrote The Strain novels with Chuck Hogan. His honors also include Hugo and Nebula awards, induction into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. He speaks with infectious passion about craft, imagination and monsters.
