Buffalo Springfield are the Canadian-American rock band whose short, brilliant original run helped invent folk rock and launched several of the biggest careers in music. The group formed in Los Angeles in 1966, uniting Americans Richie Furay and Stephen Stills with three Canadians, Dewey Martin, Bruce Palmer and Neil Young. The name came from a steamroller they spotted near their home. Signed to Atlantic Records, they debuted with "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" (1966) and released three albums: Buffalo Springfield (1966), Buffalo Springfield Again (1967) and Last Time Around (1968). Their signature song, "For What It's Worth" (1967), written by Stills, became a lasting anthem of the 1960s and reached the top ten in the United States. Other favorites include "Mr. Soul" (1967) and "Bluebird" (1967). Their sound mixed folk and country with British Invasion energy and psychedelic touches, placing them alongside the Byrds as key architects of folk rock. Members went on to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Poco and successful solo careers. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
