Washed Out is the project of Ernest Greene, a Georgia-born singer, songwriter and producer widely credited with defining chillwave. His 2009 song "Feel It All Around," later heard as the theme of the television comedy Portlandia, set the template for the genre's hazy, sample-based synth-pop. Greene followed it with Life of Leisure, then signed with Sub Pop and released Within and Without in 2011 and Paracosm in 2013. Mister Mellow came out in 2017, Purple Noon in 2020 and Notes From a Quiet Life in 2024. Greene was born on October 3, 1982, and his music is usually filed under chillwave, dream pop, synth-pop and bedroom pop. Pitchfork gave him the nickname Godfather of Chillwave. He writes, sings and produces under the Washed Out name.
