Book Too Short
Too Short, an Oakland rapper, helped pioneer West Coast hip-hop and drew national attention in the late 1980s. He started by making custom cassette songs around the Bay Area and released his debut album Don't Stop Rappin' in 1985, building a loyal local audience with a run of independent records. His fourth album, Born to Mack (1987), was sold out of his car trunk before being reissued by Jive Records, and Life Is... Too Short (1989) took him onto the Billboard 200 for the first time. Short Dog's in the House (1990) produced "The Ghetto", his top Hot 100 hit as a lead artist, and the next four albums, Shorty the Pimp (1992), Get in Where You Fit In (1993), Cocktails (1995) and Gettin' It (Album Number Ten) (1996), all reached the Billboard 200 top ten. "Blow the Whistle" became another signature track. He collaborated with Tupac Shakur and also the Notorious B.I.G., founded the Dangerous Crew collective in 1988 and Up All Nite Records in 2006, and in 2020 formed Mount Westmore with Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and E-40.
