The Midnight is the synthwave duo of Atlanta singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle and Danish producer, songwriter and singer Tim McEwan, who have built a devoted international following with nostalgic, sax-laced songs that feel lifted from a 1980s film soundtrack. The pair met at a co-writing workshop in North Hollywood in 2012, and, partly inspired by the score to Drive, wrote the songs "WeMoveForward" and "Gloria," which appeared on their 2014 debut EP, Days of Thunder. Their motto, the Japanese phrase "mono no aware," captures the bittersweet awareness that nothing lasts, a theme that runs through their music. The 12-track Endless Summer arrived in 2016, followed by The Midnight Remixed on Monstercat and the album Nocturnal in 2017, which became a Bandcamp best seller and climbed to number 17 on a Billboard Dance/Electronic chart. Kids (2018), Monsters (2020) and Heroes (2022) completed a trilogy about growing up, and Syndicate followed in 2025. On stage the duo performs with a full live band, turning its studio sound into concerts that its fans pack out across North America and Europe.
