Book The Dream Academy
The Dream Academy are an English alternative pop band best known for "Life in a Northern Town," the 1985 single that became a worldwide success and reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. The trio featured singer, guitarist and chief songwriter Nick Laird-Clowes, keyboard player Gilbert Gabriel, and Kate St John on woodwinds and piano. Formed in 1983, they set out to stand apart from the power pop of the day by weaving strings, woodwinds, timpani and synthesizers into lush, cinematic songs. After two years of rejections from labels, they signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1985. Laird-Clowes's friend David Gilmour of Pink Floyd co-produced their self-titled debut, The Dream Academy (1985), played on their records and co-wrote "Twelve-Eight Angel." "Life in a Northern Town" was written as a tribute to Nick Drake, and the follow-up "The Love Parade" also charted in the United States. Their catalog continued with Remembrance Days (1987) and A Different Kind of Weather (1990). The Dream Academy's music offers a dreamy, orchestral sound with an unmistakable 1980s signature.
