Slick Rick is a British-born, New York-based rapper, songwriter and producer widely celebrated as hip-hop's great storyteller. He rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew, rapping over Fresh's beatbox on "The Show" and its B-side "La Di Da Di," a record that has been sampled countless times since. In 1986 he became the third artist signed to Def Jam Recordings, and The Great Adventures of Slick Rick (1988) topped Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart, with "Children's Story," "Mona Lisa," "Hey Young World" and "Teenage Love" all charting. It was followed by The Ruler's Back (1991), Behind Bars (1994) and, in 1999, The Art of Storytelling. In 2025 he released Victory on Mass Appeal Records. Honored by VH1 Hip Hop Honors, his MC skills have earned high placements on rankings of the best rappers and lyricists of all time. On stage he brings character voices, humor and tightly plotted narrative rhymes.
