Book Martin Cooper
Martin Cooper is an American inventor and electrical engineer widely recognized as the father of the handheld cell phone. Born in Chicago in 1928, he earned his degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1950, then served on submarines as a naval officer in the Korean War. At Motorola, on April 3, 1973, he made the first public call from a prototype portable phone while standing on a Manhattan sidewalk, ringing a rival engineer at Bell Labs. He spent the next decade pressing regulators and leading the team that refined the device and brought it to market in 1983, as the first U.S. cellular network opened to the public. Cooper holds 11 patents in wireless communications, with deep expertise in radio spectrum management, and he co-founded several companies, including ArrayComm and Dyna LLC. His honors include election to the National Academy of Engineering, the Marconi Prize and Charles Stark Draper Prize in 2013, the Princess of Asturias Award, the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2025. Cooper speaks on innovation, wireless technology and the future of connectivity.
