Book Mariette Hartley

Mariette Hartley is an American actress whose career runs from classic Hollywood westerns to Emmy-winning television. She began on stage at 13 at the White Barn Theatre in Norwalk, Connecticut, and was mentored as a teenager by the celebrated stage actress Eva Le Gallienne. Her first credited film role came opposite Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea in Sam Peckinpah's Ride the High Country (1962), a performance that earned her a BAFTA nomination. She followed it with the lead in Drums of Africa (1963), a role in Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie (1964) and the space drama Marooned (1969). On television she played Claire Morton on Peyton Place in 1965, turned up in a variety of parts on Gunsmoke, and appeared in The Twilight Zone episode "The Long Morrow," cast by Rod Serling, whom she had once phoned as a high school student to invite to speak to her class. In 1979 she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and a long-running series of commercials with James Garner made her a household face. She holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and shares her stories with grace and humor.
