De La Soul is a hip-hop group from Amityville, a village on Long Island, New York, formed in 1988. The trio of Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove and Maseo began the group as high school friends. They are celebrated for eclectic sampling, offbeat lyrics and a major role in shaping jazz rap and alternative hip-hop. Their landmark debut, 3 Feet High and Rising, appeared in 1989 and was followed by De La Soul Is Dead in 1991, Buhloone Mind State in 1993, Stakes Is High in 1996, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump in 2000, AOI: Bionix in 2001 and The Grind Date in 2004, ten studio albums in all. The group received a Soul Train Music Award nomination for best rap album in 1990. De La Soul brought a playful, positive voice to the genre and remains a touchstone for generations of artists.
