The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra is the ensemble behind America's most famous Fourth of July concert, playing the Hatch Memorial Shell on Boston's Esplanade with cannon fire during Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" and an unfurling flag at the close of Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Created in 1885 as a sister ensemble to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and staffed largely by its musicians, the Pops specializes in light classical and popular music, with a spring season and a December Holiday Pops series at Symphony Hall. Arthur Fiedler led the orchestra for fifty years from 1930, launching the free Esplanade concerts beside the Charles River, introducing Holiday Pops and popularizing Leroy Anderson favorites such as "Sleigh Ride" and "The Typewriter," while building one of the largest recording catalogs of any orchestra. Film composer John Williams succeeded him in 1980, added his own scores to the repertoire and remains laureate conductor. Keith Lockhart has led the Pops since 1995, presenting film-with-orchestra nights, Broadway and Beatles tributes and guest stars across genres, and in 2017 the orchestra devoted a full season and the album Lights, Camera…Music to Williams.
