Book Antony and the Johnsons
Anohni and the Johnsons, previously known as Antony and the Johnsons, is a music ensemble built around the songs of the English singer-songwriter Anohni and her collaborators, and its roots are in New York City. Anohni founded the Johnsons in 1995 as an experimental theater group, gathered musicians in 1997 to record a first album and began performing in New York as Antony and the Johnsons. The self-titled debut album came out in 2000. I Am a Bird Now followed in 2005, won the Mercury Prize that year and earned a nomination for the Shortlist Music Prize. Next came The Crying Light in 2009, Swanlights in 2010 and the live album Cut the World in 2012. In 2016 Anohni released the solo electronic album Hopelessness with Hudson Mohawke and Daniel Lopatin, and in July 2023 the ensemble returned under its current name with My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross. The group's chamber-pop sound centers on a singular, quavering voice and rich, orchestral arrangements, and its concerts are intimate, emotionally charged and theatrical.
