Book Alicia Garza
Alicia Garza is an American civil rights activist, writer and public speaker known around the world as a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement. Her advocacy centers on social and racial justice, with particular attention to Black women, LGBTQ+ people and immigrants, and the BBC named her to its 100 Women list in 2020. Garza's organizing roots run deep in the Bay Area. In 2003 she began a political education training program with the School of Unity and Liberation in Oakland, which placed young people of color with community groups in West Oakland, and she went on to work with Just Cause Oakland and the group PUEBLO on campaigns linking economic security and community safety. She has worked with the National Domestic Workers Alliance and leads work at the Black Futures Lab, which focuses on building political power in Black communities. As a writer her commentary has run in Time, The Guardian, The Nation, Rolling Stone, Elle, Essence and HuffPost. Garza speaks with clarity and conviction about organizing, power and building movements that last.
