The Comet Is Coming is the London trio that fuses jazz, electronica, funk and psychedelic rock into a cosmic, dance-ready sound. The group features saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, known as King Shabaka, keyboardist Dan Leavers, known as Danalogue, and drummer Max Hallett, known as Betamax. Their name comes from a BBC Radiophonic Workshop piece whose sci-fi atmosphere inspired the band's spacey aesthetic. Signed first to The Leaf Label, they released the debut EP Prophecy on limited-edition vinyl in November 2015, followed by the full-length Channel the Spirits in April 2016, which earned a nomination for the Mercury Prize. In 2018 they moved to the storied jazz label Impulse!, which issued Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery (2019) and Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam (2022). The band became a central part of the thriving London jazz scene, connecting improvised music with club culture and drawing young audiences to the genre. On stage they deliver intense, improvised sets where roaring saxophone lines ride over pulsing synthesizers and propulsive drums, creating something closer to a rave than a typical jazz gig.
