Book The Chantays

The Chantays are the Orange County surf rock band that gave the world "Pipeline," one of the essential instrumentals of the surf era. Five friends from Santa Ana High School in California, Bob Spickard, Brian Carman, Bob Welch, Warren Waters and Rob Marshall, formed the group in 1961, and Spickard and Carman co-wrote "Pipeline." Recorded and released in December 1962, the track peaked at number four on the Hot 100 in the spring of 1963. Their sound paired electric keyboards with reverb-drenched surf guitar to create an eerie, ghostly atmosphere. The debut album Pipeline (1963) included "Blunderbus" and "El Conquistador," followed by Two Sides of the Chantays, and the band later returned with Next Set (1994) and A Dawning Sun (2023). They toured Japan and the United States, sometimes sharing bills with the Righteous Brothers and Roy Orbison, and stood out as the only rock and roll band to appear on The Lawrence Welk Show. "Pipeline" has since been covered by the Ventures, Dick Dale with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Anthrax and Pat Metheny, among many others. The Chantays bring a genuine piece of 1960s California surf history to the stage.
