The Box Tops are the Memphis band behind "The Letter," a 1967 hit that still opens oldies sets around the world. Formed in 1967 out of a local group called The Devilles, they became a leading blue-eyed soul act of the era, with Alex Chilton's raw, husky lead vocal at the front and Danny Smythe, John Evans, Bill Cunningham and Gary Talley behind him. Recording at Memphis's American Sound Studio under Chips Moman, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, they blended soul grit with light pop polish on "Cry Like a Baby," "Soul Deep," "Neon Rainbow," "I Met Her in Church" and "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March." Their albums include The Letter / Neon Rainbow (1967), Cry Like a Baby (1968), Non Stop (1968) and Dimensions (1969), and they returned with Tear Off! (1998). Chilton went on to lead the influential power pop group Big Star and to a solo career. In 2018 the band entered the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. The Box Tops deliver a tight set of radio classics rooted in the Memphis sound, the kind of concise, timeless hits audiences sing along to from the first bar.
