Book Shearwater
Shearwater is an Austin, Texas indie rock band fronted by singer and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Meiburg, whose soaring voice anchors songs steeped in imagery from the natural world. Meiburg founded the project in 1999 with fellow Okkervil River member Will Sheff as a home for their quieter material, naming it after the seabird. The group debuted with The Dissolving Room (2001), followed by Everybody Makes Mistakes (2002), Winged Life (2004) and the Thieves EP. Its 2006 album Palo Santo, written and sung entirely by Meiburg, was a critical breakthrough; NPR's Stephen Thompson named it the best album of that year, and "Red Sea, Black Sea" was a NPR Song of the Day. The band went on to release Rook (2008), The Golden Archipelago (2010), Animal Joy (2012), Fellow Travelers (2013), Jet Plane and Oxbow (2016), Shearwater Plays Lodger (2016), The Great Awakening (2022) and The New World (2026). Early tours alongside Blonde Redhead, The Mountain Goats and Akron/Family helped grow its audience. On stage the band delivers lush, dramatic, cinematic indie rock built around Meiburg's remarkable range.
