Trained from childhood in both Hindustani and Carnatic traditions, he began playing the veena at five and studied with Pandit Shrinivas Khale and T.R. Working with A. R. Rahman, he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his song in Kandukondain Kandukondain. His wide catalog includes Jaikara (2002), Shairana (2003), Nine (2003), Tu Pass Hai (2004) and Is That So? (2020). He won the Grammy for Best Global Music Album for This Moment, among three career Grammy nominations, received the Padma Shri in 2019, and was given a honorary doctorate by Birmingham City University in 2023.
