Book Jefferson Starship
Jefferson Starship is the San Francisco rock band that grew out of Jefferson Airplane in 1974, when Paul Kantner and Grace Slick turned a run of solo projects into a new group. They were joined by David Freiberg, guitarist Craig Chaquico, drummer John Barbata, Pete Sears and fiddler Papa John Creach, and former Airplane singer Marty Balin came aboard in 1975. That year's Red Octopus went all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and the 1976 follow-up Spitfire reached the top five. Over the next decade the lineup shifted many times, with Mickey Thomas stepping in as lead singer after Slick and Balin left in 1978 and Slick returning in 1981. When Kantner quit in 1984, the others carried on as Starship. Kantner revived the name in 1992 as Jefferson Starship: The Next Generation, touring steadily through the 1990s and beyond, and the band has continued with a refreshed lineup since his death in 2016. Shows draw on the long songbook of both the Airplane and Starship eras, giving audiences decades of San Francisco rock history in one night.
