Gipsy Kings are the French band that carried rumba flamenca to audiences around the globe, blending flamenco guitar, Catalan rumba, salsa and pop into an irresistibly festive sound. Founded in Arles in 1979 as Los Reyes, the group grew out of the family of José Reyes, whose sons joined forces with their Baliardo cousins, nephews of guitar legend Manitas de Plata, with Nicolas Reyes on lead vocals and Tonino Baliardo on lead guitar. They sing mostly in Spanish, mixing in Catalan, French and Occitan, and they are equally famous for bold reinventions of English-language pop hits. After the early albums Allegria (1982) and Luna de fuego (1983), the self-titled Gipsy Kings (1987) made them international stars, followed by Mosaïque (1989), Este mundo (1991), Love & Liberté (1993), Compás (1997), Somos gitanos (2001), Pasajero (2006), Nací Gitano (2022) and Historia (2026). Savor Flamenco won the Grammy for Best World Music Album, one of eight nominations, and the band took the Victoire du groupe in 1990. On stage, their wall of rhythm guitars, handclaps and passionate vocals turns any room into a celebration.
