Book Danish National Symphony Orchestra
The Danish National Symphony Orchestra, known at home as DR Symfoniorkestret, is Denmark's flagship symphony orchestra and the principal ensemble of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. Based at the Koncerthuset concert hall in Copenhagen, it traces its roots to singer Emil Holm, who championed a full-time Danish symphony orchestra and helped found it in 1925 with just 11 players under conductor Launy Grøndahl. The ensemble expanded rapidly, gave its first public concert in 1927, and by 1948 counted 92 musicians. Over the decades it has worked with major conductors including Nikolai Malko and Fritz Busch, and Herbert Blomstedt became its first official principal conductor in 1967, recording the orchestral works of Carl Nielsen and later receiving the title of honorary conductor. Its vast discography includes Ein Deutsches Requiem, Lulu, Aladdin, Drot og marsk, Scythian Suite / Alexander Nevsky and Champagne Galop: Polkas, Mazurkas and Waltzes of Hans Christian Lumbye. With deep Nordic roots and a broad repertoire spanning the classics to Danish and contemporary works, the orchestra delivers world-class symphonic performances of remarkable polish, power and color.
