Book Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles is a Canadian electronic act formed in Toronto in 2005 by producer and songwriter Ethan Kath with singer Alice Glass. The project built its name on lo-fi, melancholic homemade productions and famously chaotic live shows, earning an early buzz when the track "Alice Practice" circulated online. The duo took its name from a phrase in the She-Ra cartoon. After a string of limited vinyl singles in 2006 and 2007, they released four studio albums: Crystal Castles (2008), a second self-titled record, Crystal Castles (2010), (III) (2012) and Amnesty (I) (2016), the last featuring vocalist Edith Frances, who took over after Glass left in 2014. They also toured on the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour in 2011. Their music nods to synth-pop pioneers like Kraftwerk and New Order while mixing glitchy synths and video-game textures with distorted vocals. Crystal Castles remains a touchstone for fans of dark, abrasive electronic pop and the cult following that grew around its intense, strobe-lit concerts.
