Book Calypso Rose

Calypso Rose is known across the Caribbean as the mother of calypso, the first woman to become a star of the genre and a songwriter with upward of 1,000 compositions to her name. Born in Bethel Village, Tobago, in 1940, she wrote her first calypso, "Glass Thief," at 13 and has gone on to record two dozen albums. Her success was so complete that the Calypso King competition in Trinidad and Tobago was renamed the Calypso Monarch to reflect a field she had won. Her songs take on racism, sexism and gender equality, and she has served as an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for former child soldiers. She has collected every honor the Caribbean offers its living artists, and in 2017 her album Far From Home won the Victoires de la Musique prize for world music album in France. Her catalog includes Soca Diva, Soul on Fire, Just Call Jesus, So Calypso! and Forever (2022). Based in Queens, New York, she still returns to Trinidad and Tobago regularly and keeps touring, carrying six decades of calypso history to audiences around the world.
