Book Bob Behnken
Bob Behnken is an American engineer, former NASA astronaut and former Chief of the Astronaut Office, and one of the first two people ever launched to orbit aboard a commercial spacecraft. He studied mechanical engineering and physics at Washington University in St. Louis, then earned his master's and PhD in mechanical engineering at Caltech and rose to colonel in the Air Force before NASA selected him in 2000. As a mission specialist he flew on the Space Shuttle missions STS-123 in 2008 and STS-130 in 2010, logging upward of 700 hours in space and 55 hours of spacewalks. After the shuttle era ended, he was chief of the Astronaut Office between 2012 and 2015. Assigned to SpaceX's Dragon 2 under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, he launched with Doug Hurley on Crew Dragon Demo-2 on May 30, 2020, docking with the International Space Station for a 62-day stay that included four spacewalks with Christopher Cassidy. His honors include the Congressional Space Medal of Honor (2023), the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and two NASA Space Flight Medals. Behnken gives audiences a vivid insider view of engineering, risk, teamwork and the commercial space era.
