Book Black Coffee
Black Coffee is a Grammy-winning South African DJ, producer and songwriter whose album Subconsciously won Best Dance/Electronic Music Album at the 64th Grammy Awards. Born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, he began in 1994 and gained wider notice through the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy. In 2005 he remixed Hugh Masekela's "Stimela," founded the label Soulistic Music and used it to release his self-titled debut album, which drew on R&B and jazz and featured Busi Mhlongo. Have Another One (2007) carried "Wathula Nje" and introduced the young producer Culoe De Song, and he played the Red Bull Music Academy lounge at Barcelona's Sonar Festival. Home Brewed (2009) featured Hugh Masekela, Zonke and Zakes Bantwini, and in 2010 he performed for 60 hours straight at Maponya Mall in Soweto. His 2011 Africa Rising show at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium paired a live band with a 24-piece orchestra. Pieces of Me, Music Is King and Subconsciously followed. Alongside the Grammy, he has collected eight SAMAs, two Metro FM Awards and four DJ Awards.
