Book Ed Balls
Ed Balls is an economist, broadcaster and former British cabinet minister who co-presents ITV's Good Morning Britain and hosts the podcast Political Currency with former Chancellor George Osborne. An Oxford PPE graduate from Keble College, he was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard, taught there as a fellow and became lead economic writer at the Financial Times. He joined Gordon Brown as an adviser in 1994 and rose to Chief Economic Adviser to the Treasury after Labour's 1997 victory. Elected to Parliament for Normanton in 2005, later Morley and Outwood, he served as Economic Secretary to the Treasury, as Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families in Brown's cabinet from 2007 to 2010 and, in opposition, as Shadow Chancellor between 2011 and 2015. Since leaving politics he has chaired Norwich City Football Club and, since 2020, held a professorship in political economy at King's College London. Television audiences took to him on series 14 of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, where he lasted ten weeks, and he won BBC's Celebrity Best Home Cook in 2021. His memoir, Speaking Out: Lessons in Life and Politics, was published in 2016.
